Weight loss is on everyone’s mind. It’s a popular topic, and it seems everyone has a few pounds they want to shed. It’s also spawned a mufti-million-dollar industry that pumps out all kinds of diets, gadgets and pills it says will burn fat and tone muscles like magic. Sadly, most if it does nothing of the sort. The only truly effective way to lose weight is to increase your activity and decrease your caloric intake. (Eating healthy foods instead of empty calories helps) This doesn’t mean starving yourself, in fact that can actually do the opposite and make you gain weight. How? When you suddenly and dramatically drop your caloric intake, your body responds by going into starvation mode, which involves slowing down your metabolism. This is the last thing you want if you are looking to lose weight. Your metabolism controls your energy and how fast you burn calories. The reason increasing activity helps is because it boosts your metabolism

You should gradually increase your activity and decrease your caloric intake. Don’t try to lose a lot of weight quickly. Most of the diets and gadgets that promise you can lose large amounts of weight in a short time aren’t telling the truth. Instead they include diuretics or things that make you sweat profusely for an extended period so that you lose water weight, not fat. Not only is this dangerous because it can dehydrate you, but as soon as you stop, you’ll put the water weight right back on. What you want to do is slowly but steadily drop pounds. Studies have shown that people who lose weight slowly are much more likely to keep it off. Yoyo dieting is dangerous and ineffective.

Don’t fall for any of the gadgets you see on TV infomercials. They all promise you can lose weight and tone up by simply using them a few minutes a day, but they all have fine print that admit you need to do additional exercise and/or follow a diet plan. Speaking of diets, never begin one without talking to you doctor first and avoid any that involve any kind of diet pills!

Now for some people, diets and exercise just don’t work, and there is no shame in that. For those folks, weight loss surgery is an excellent option. It’s only for people with more than 100lbs to lose. Your doctor can tell you if you are a good candidate and go over the options with you. For more info, check out Lap Band Houston. Remember though that this is serious surgery and it will involve lifestyle changes and learning a whole new way of eating. That said, it has changed many lives for the better!
